Royal has a thick clear coat of plastic over the reverse
paint.
Reverse painting is a technique of applying paint on the backside of a clear coat of plastic for protection and 3-D beauty. Sometimes the sheen is reminescent of stained glass windows.. Notice the "V" shaped arrows and pointers, common in the late 50s-early 60s. Find more "V" examples here and here. Also common were regal names: Royal, Regency, Viscount, Coronet, King, and Crown.
